Bush Administration Battles Amish Over RFID Chips

Wired reports:

The Bush administration on Thursday urged a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit brought by a group of Amish farmers in Michigan claiming RFID chips required on cattle "are a mark of the beast."

The RFID tagging program is a measure to help track bovine and other livestock diseases. As radio frequency identification devices become a daily part of the electronic age, RFID technology is increasingly coming under fire for allegedly being the mark of Satan.

The Virginia-based Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, a 1,400-member group, brought the case. Some of its members so staunchly oppose the program that "they may have to quit farming," according to the lawsuit.

Questions For Malcolm Gladwell

In "Outliers," Malcolm Gladwell's third book, he casts his eye on people who have excelled in their fields — and then analyzes how their lives have been as influenced by serendipity as much as their own talents. His publisher, Little, Brown, has ordered up a large first print run of 640,000 copies.

Mr. Gladwell, whose two earlier titles, "The Tipping Point" and "Blink," were national best sellers, asks his readers to question individual success stories. "People don't rise from nothing," he writes. "They are invariably the beneficiaries of hidden advantages and extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies that allow them to learn and work hard and make sense of the world in ways others cannot." The 45-year-old Mr. Gladwell, who lives in New York City, reflects on his new book as well as how he frames his ideas. read more

The Beatles' Long Lost Track Surfaces

Sir Paul McCartney has confirmed a 14-minute long Beatles track many thought was a myth does exist — and says he wants the public to hear it. He told BBC Radio 4's Front Row the track — called "Carnival of Light" — was not released because the other Beatles thought it was too "adventurous".

Dan Rather Starts To Prove CBS Fired Him To Please Republicans

When Dan Rather filed suit against CBS 14 months ago — claiming, among other things, that his former employer had commissioned a politically biased investigation into his work on a “60 Minutes” segment about President Bush’s National Guard service — the network predicted the quick and favorable dismissal of the case, which it derided as “old news.”

So far, Mr. Rather has spent more than $2 million of his own money on the suit. And according to documents filed recently in court, he may be getting something for his money.

Using tools unavailable to him as a reporter — including the power of subpoena and the threat of punishment against witnesses who lie under oath — he has unearthed evidence that would seem to support his assertion that CBS intended its investigation, at least in part, to quell Republican criticism of the network. read more

Real 19th Century Vampire Killing Kit Is a Must In Current Economic Climate

Jesus Diaz, Gizmodo: Sold at an auction for $14,850, this 100% authentic vampire kit made circa 1800 is an absolute steal, specially compared to this $12,000 kit which is from a later date and has fewer apparatus. I mean, can you really put a price to the ability to battle vampires like Kiefer Sutherland, Dick Cheney and Bono? I say no. And make no mistakes, blood-sucking undeads, because this hand-carved walnut portable suitcase comes loaded with all I need to kill you:

– Creepy-looking cross
– Bible
– Hand gun and silver bullets
– Holy oils
– Holy water
– Mirrors
– Candles
– Garlic
– Badass wood and metal stake with added cross for vampiric extra-pain
– Extra wood stakes, just in case

The 19th century vampire killing kit was sold in an auction as part of the Jimmy Pippen estate, which shows that the aforementioned Jimmy Pippen was a either a complete nutcase or knew something that we don't. Just in case, I'm making one myself.

Scientists Discover Gene For Cocaine Addiction

Ian Sample, Guardian: It has become commonplace for people who are overweight to attribute their waistline to their DNA. Now, celebrities caught snorting cocaine might also be able to blame their parents.

Scientists reported yesterday the discovery of a gene that increases the chances of becoming hooked on the drug. Addicts were 25% more likely to carry the gene variant than people who did not use cocaine, a study found.

The discovery is unlikely to lead to a treatment for cocaine addicts, but scientists hope it could be used to screen for those most likely to have problems kicking the habit if they ever try the drug.

"If you are a carrier of this gene variant, the likelihood of getting addicted to cocaine is higher," said Rainer Spanagel, a professor of psychopharmacology at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany, who led the study. "You can certainly use this as a vulnerability marker for cocaine addiction." read more

Experts Say Humans Can Live to 1,000 – Some Experts Want to Prevent That

Cambridge University geneticist Aubrey de Grey has famously stated, “The first person to live to be 1,000 years old is certainly alive today ... whether they realize it or not, barring accidents and suicide, most people now 40 years or younger can expect to live for centuries.”

Perhaps de Gray is way too optimistic, but plenty of others have joined the search for a virtual fountain of youth. In fact, a growing number of scientists, doctors, geneticists and nanotech experts — many with impeccable academic credentials — are insisting that there is no hard reason why ageing can’t be dramatically slowed or prevented altogether. Not only is it theoretically possible, they argue, but a scientifically achievable goal that can and should be reached in time to benefit those alive today.

“I am working on immortality,” says Michael Rose, a professor of evolutionary biology at the University of California, Irvine, who has achieved breakthrough results extending the lives of fruit flies. “Twenty years ago the idea of postponing aging, let alone reversing it, was weird and off-the-wall. Today there are good reasons for thinking it is fundamentally possible.” read more

Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson Pulled Another Fast One on American Taxpayers

Our troubles with Hank started back when he was CEO at Goldman-$achs. Hank helped launch the masked bogus financial instruments called "derivatives" which are at the Heart of the Global Meltdown of Banks around our Planet.

Next, at the invitation of GwB, Hank skipped over to the US Treasury, where his months of failures to act made things worse. When the World Economy had festered to the point of near collapse — a week before Congress was to go home to hit the Campaign Trail — Hank laid a 3-page Bailout Plan before them, and said, "take it or leave it." BTW, if you don't take it — while you're out of Washington — the World as you know it will collapse. There will be Rioting in the Streets of America, requiring us to declare Martial Law. Obediently, Congress swallowed Hank's Bailout Pig, whole.

Now, barely a month later, Hank is telling us what he already knew from the beginning: that the $700,000,000,000 he got from Congress to Bailout distressed homeowner mortgages couldn't be done soon enough to make any difference. That's why, thus far, his Bailout Czar Neel Kaskari (also imported from Goldman-$achs) has NOT bought ONE SINGLE distressed mortgage. read more

Michael Moore's Next Movie

Michael Moore, whose most recent film is the Disinformation-distributed Slacker Uprising, has leaked details about his next movie:

When Paramount Vantage and Overture announced Michael Moore's long-gestating follow-up to "Fahrenheit 9/11" in May, executives stressed the film's foreign-policy scope. "This is going to tackle what's going on in the world and America's place in it," Paramount Vantage chief Nick Meyer said.

But as the political winds shifted in the months before the election — and gusted after it — Moore subtly began reorienting his movie. Instead of foreign policy, the film's focus now is more on the global financial crisis and the U.S. economy.

The untitled movie will contain an end-of-the-empire tone, say those familiar with the project, and Moore no doubt hopes that this will give it a more general feel that will untether it from a specific political moment. read more

America's Biggest Threat: Killer At Large

I've spent the last couple of years working on a documentary about the American obesity epidemic and it's finally time to pull the sheet off of the sculpture, as it were.

Killer at Large examines the rapidly increasing level of American obesity from a public health and policy perspective, and we hope it will blow your hair back. We were able to talk to just about everybody from Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma) and Marion Nestle (Food Politics) to Ralph Nader and film director Neil LaBute. Even Senator Tom Harkin plays a prevalent role.
